"The ultimate teaching of all education is just this, that every man owes to the generation in which he lives the last full measure of devotion to whatsoever things are true."
—Henry Marshall Tory
(November 8, 2009) - We, the members of the University of Alberta community, clearly have a profoundly important task in front of us.
Our task is at once quite simple and incredibly complex: we must work together to assure the continued success of this university while closing an anticipated budget gap of $59 million for the 2010-2011 budget year.
Without doubt this is a significant challenge – and as is always the case in times of great challenge, we have a choice. We can let this moment in the U of A’s century-long history define us, or we can define the moment. We can come together to assure that the sturdy fabric of the university – a fabric woven of our commitment to excellence, our drive to succeed, our firm understanding of the value of this institution to the province, the nation and the world – remains strong, or we can let this challenge tear apart the very fabric of the institution. I remain confident, given the trademark collegiality that characterizes this University and in fact differentiates us from so many of our peers, that we can, and will, move forward together to meet the challenge.
